BIG ONE wins over European market PDF Print E-mail
An entrepreneurial spirit has made it possible: starting in the 1950s as sales agents for agricultural machinery, Humbaur GmbH have become one of Europe’s leading manufacturers of vehicle trailers and semi-trailers of all types.

In June 2007 the company based in Gersthofen, Germany, had already delivered the 400,000th trailer. Every year more than 45,000 open and enclosed trailers are added to that. A semitrailer programme with a promising name – the BIG ONE – joined numerous other trailer segments on the market in 2006. At IAA 2006 Humbaur presented the BIG ONE and its big brother, the BIG ONE Mega, for the first time. By now the BIG ONE family has been extended and will offer a number of surprises at IAA 2008 in Hannover.

ImageFrom agricultural sales representatives to Europe’s largest trailer manufacturers in 50 years Humbaur have accomplished much in its relatively short history: it all started with Anton Humbaur, who established a dealership for agricultural products in 1957. In 1980 he erected a new building and incorporated vehicle trailers into his product range. In 1984 he manufactured the first Humbaur trailer, thereby laying the cornerstone for the future success of the company. With the entry of his son Ulrich into the company the course changed completely. The now 47-year-old started manufacturing horse trailers in 1998, creating a second pillar of the company in the process. Currently around 3,500 units are manufactured annually.

The new millennium began with a move in 2001 to the present state-of-the-art location in Gersthofen covering an area of 100,000 m2, 45,000 m2 of which is covered hall space. It was also Ulrich Humbaur who was to thank in 2006 for commencing manufacture of the BIG ONE semitrailer series. This was the final step to the top for the trailer manufacturer. Further building plots adjacent to the existing location were purchased to accommodate distribution warehouses for the BIG ONE, raising the total area to 135,000 m2. Currently around 45,000 trailers in total are manufactured annually in the Humbaur factory, and this number is increasing every year.

This development is also reflected in the company’s figures. Quantities have more than doubled since 2000. Not only that, but the number of staff has now reached 500; when the new BIG ONE factory is finished in 2010 there should be another increase.
